APPLYING START-UP THINKING TO TEACHER DEVELOPMENT
(Jo Sayers and Nick Robinson )
ELT Jam academy https://eltjam.com/tag/english-success-academy/
The start up mindset:
*Curiosity
*No fear
*Encourage teachers to be fearless
*Speak to people you are building product or service for
Solutions that don't start with the learner needs at the center are a risk
To understand your users more deeply, go into discussions with a sense of curiosity. Find out what really works for them
Identify and articulate the value you offer
How are teachers going to benefit by that?
Explore possibilities
Design > Evaluate > Deliver
Test with people who you know will pick holes and criticise your work.
No product is perfect. It’s by being open to hearing about the shortfalls that we make things better.
Expect to keep on changing and adapting things as you go.
Many teachers feel really lost when it comes to digital
Teachers like a variety of resources, with resources being more popular than courses and lesson plans

DESIGN THINKING AND ONLINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Gabriel Díaz Maggioli
A way of organising complexity or finding clarity in chaos through synthesis. In synthetizing we forge connections through selective pruning and visual organisation.
How do we understand the experiences of our participants? Questionnaire that focuses on problems teachers have had. With that wealth of information we understand that context, we need to walk a mile in their shoes to understand that - Empathise
We need to walk out of our comfort zone. From that moment we can start brainstorming - Generate Ideas
We are not concerned about finding THE ANSWER but finding POSSIBLE ANSWERS
Lot's of the design will be a prototype - Try out
Reflect - Bring to bear what worked and what did not work
There are three responses to apiece of design - yes, no and WOW!
WOW is the one to aim for (Milton Glaser)
TEACHING OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS - Patricia Reynolds
Micro level : in the classroom
Meso: Institutions /system
Macro : the society
Teachers have to learn how to become change agents
What happens is that they do not see themselves as agents of change
How do you change ... and teach old dogs some new tricks ?
*Travels in Twitter (sts participate by twitting along classes)
*New discoveries - digital storytelling, communities of practice , infuse new information into teaching
Teachers need a community to challenge their confort zone.
CLICK LIKE FOR LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (Tereza Carvalho)
Facebook can help us develop linguistically because it's a genre
It's a rich linguistic landscape. Are we taking advantage of that ?
Language is power
Many people are just watching because they feel insecure about their English
They shy away from discussion because they feel they have to learn to teach only
HOW TO SUPPORT TEACHERS NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING (Katherine Anderson)
Working with closed communities at Facebook, the 'paperless' approach at her school, using 'Dropbox' to share resources , they use Open Educational Resources, Creative Commons and they share like crazy
Using Google Hang Out especially because of screenshare
This collaboration makes teacher work simpler to interact and to know where the resources are (no more: where's the CD X?) https://katkander.wordpress.com/
